As the frenzy of Black Friday and intensity of the Christmas period begin to step up, The Willoughby Book Club has decided to do things a little differently again this year and we're embracing the spirit of Giving Tuesday.
Giving Tuesday, taking place on 3rd December, is a growing global movement dedicated to giving back and harnessing the power of community in all sorts of interesting and innovative ways. At Willoughby, we always seek to make a positive impact on the local community and beyond through thoughtful and compassionate actions, so Giving Tuesday is the perfect fit for us!
This year we'll be personally delivering a hand-selected bundle of children's books and gifts to Alice Hawkins Community Projects, a vital lifeline for many people here in our home city of Leicester. We hope to nurture the love and joy of books in young people, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Books and reading play such an important role in educational outcomes for young people and access to books from an early age can make such a difference in instilling a love of reading for pleasure, which can grow and develop over a lifetime. A recent study by the National Literacy Trust showed that reading for pleasure among children and young people is at an all time low. In the hustle and bustle of the modern world, along with the daily distractions of phones and tech, it can feel harder than ever to create and maintain the space needed to embrace reading for pleasure. Any small difference we can make toward getting books into the hands of young readers is an opportunity we will jump at, because all of us here at The Willoughby Book Club are lucky enough to live lives enriched by books and reading and always strive to share that joy with others.
Additionally, the whole Willoughby team has also joined together to make a donation to the Alice Hawkins food bank. By contributing, we hope to make a difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity during these tough times.
Our participation in Giving Tuesday is aligned with our continual commitment to making a positive impact beyond retail. We believe that fostering a sense of community and spreading kindness can be just as fulfilling, if not more so, than the thrill of a Black Friday sale.
